No Raid, just 1 gigantic 500 GB HDD.

Gotcha. I also installed WinXP (Pro)on my XPS420, but had no luck in
setting up a RAID1 configuration with that OS.
Ended up taking it back to Vista for the sake of the RAID array.

I also have just a single 500GB disk. However if you have Samsung hard
disks in your machine there is a firmware update available on the Dell
site which corrects problems with using Raid on the Samsung drives.

I also don't like the Inspiron desktops. If I were to get a new
laptop now it would be a XPS 420 from the outlet. My XPS 410 is
serving me well, and I expect it to last a few more years of heavy
duty.
All of my Windows PCs have been UPGRADED from Vista to XP. The best
reason for Vista IMO is an application like Bob Levine's 64-bit Vista,
if you want a lot of RAM that the system can use. Otherwise, I prefer
XP and no longer even have a Vista system.

Oops, above should read "If I were to get a new _desktop_" (not
laptop).
Yes. It's just easier in a newsgroup to explain how to turn it off at
the drive level.
