My Dimension E521 cannot log onto my DSL service. I tried to change
out the network card when I see that it is somehow soldered to teh
motherboard. I got a card from Dell but it doesnot seem to work.
Does anyone know what I need to do here? When I go into device
manager it seems that it cannot disable the network card. Is this
enough information ? if not just let me know. Thanks.

Don't worry about the integrated NIC. Just install the new NIC, plug in
the Ethernet cable and install the necessary drivers (if needed).
Once it's set up, go into Network Connections and configure the new
connection. While you are there, disable the old one.

what dsl service do you have? what equipment (make/model) did the dsl
provider give you?
cable modem service typically comes with a modem that is authenticated on
the cable operators system by the modems unique machine address code - so
with cable you just plug in an go. dsl requires that you log on before you
can use the service. the logon used to be done via installing undesirable
software on your pc but more recently is done by the combination
modem/router provided by the dsl company. you do have to configure the
modem/router before it will work. i suspect that you have not done this and
that you should call the dsl company to get direction on how to do so. i
doubt that there is anything wrong with either the integrated network
adapter in your pc or the the network adapter that you added.

No router, no modem. Just a network 10.100 card. But teh driver came
in a floppy disk and I don't have a drive for it. So i will have to
try to d/l it from the web.
a network card and a dsl modem is not going to connect you to any dsl
provider i know. you need software from the dsl provider which provides
ppoe protocol and unfortunately usually loads a ton of other worthless crap
on your pc. i mentioned this above but i think you glossed over it. call
your dsl provider. calling dell isn't going to help (as you have learned)
because they neither know or care about supporting you with questions that
have nothing to do with them and everything to do with your dsl provider.
this is not going to be resolved here, particularly if you are not
forthcoming or complete with the information you provide (still didn't
mention the make/model of the dsl modem). if the dsl provider can't help
then perhaps someone else can. i tried and won't do so again. ood luck.
