Default Dimension 8400 cpu upgrade

I dropped a P4 670 chip in to my Dell that had a 630 in it..
The fan speed at start up now sounds like a jet taking off.
Does anyone one know if there is a Dell upgrade heat sink and fan for
670 chip?

Did you properly clean the base of the heatsink of any old thermal compound
and replace it? (CPU's also)

Could be a simple heatsink/CPU contact issue causing the excess heat.....

That's about the hottest Prescott you'll find anyway. g

Yep, cleaned and put new Arctic Silver on the chip..
Don't really know what happened yet though, when I booted the computer
after putting in the chip, the fan speed started off fast and got faster
as the CPU usage increased. I know the 8400 had some issues with the fan
speed. I used a program called "Fanspeed", when I ran it, it reduced the
speed, but it must have dropped it lower than the safe levels as after
about 30 mins I had a thermal shutdown.

I let the computer cool for about and hour, opened the case and then
started it back up, uninstalled the Fanspeed program and also did a
system restore. Rebooted, fan speed seems back to running normal. With
the computer case open and doing a virus scan, I could not detect much
heat in the heat sink by laying my hand on it, however the hard drives
were quite hot and with the case closed that heat is being pulled right
through the heat sink.

I closed the case, popped off one of the 3 1/2" bay covers for extra
ventilation so far everything seem to be running fine. But I would like
to find a program that monitors cpu temperatures, if anyone knows of a
good one please let me know....

There was also a second OEM fan option (* due to warmer video cards) for
those models that mounted very near the drive cage on the front panel steel.
Was designed to pull air through the lower front scoop/vent.

Can't find a graphic for it, only a mention of it:

NOTICE: PCI Express graphics cards that run higher than 75 W may require an
additional cooling fan. Otherwise, your card could overheat and damage your
computer.
