Default Dimension 4100 Flaky

I have a Dimension 4100 for guests that has been getting really flaky.
Frequent lock-ups, BSOD, etc. Thought it might be all the junk that
has been added over the years since I bought it back in 2000.

I tried reformatting the hard drive and re-installing the OS (Now XP
Pro.) Never could get a re-install without getting the BSOD before it
completed. Tried another known good hard drive. No joy. Cleaned and
reseated the DRAM. No help. Today I will reseat the CPU and cables.
What else can I do without spending money on it? I would try to test
the DRAM, but don't think I would ever get through the test. I would
like to get it running before I give it away on FreeCycle. Maybe it's
just a lost cause.

It's taken 4 days for this message to show up. In the meantime, I
have given the 4100 away. I did get it going by doing a reinstall of
the original Windows Me operating system.

G'day Dick,

As one who is still using a 4100, I'm not too happy to see this
message. (I've even been considering adding more memory to mine. :-)

what does the blue screen say exactly?
it does tell you what the error is, although a little cryptic.

also, you should run the complete dell diags, either from the utility
partition by hitting f12 at boot, or from booting the cdrom.
that will tell you what's going on also.

if those crap out before completing, then your problem is memory or
processor. try swapping out one of your chips if you have 2,
if you only have one, try and switch with a working one.

otherwise donate it as is.
people who grab these things know what to do with them.
just make sure to erase your data first.
