I'm having a heck of a time trying to get a 256MB EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 6200
PCI graphics card to work in my Dimension 2400 PC. I downloaded and
installed the most recent drivers from NVIDIA, then set the default video in
the BIOS to Automatic, then made the NVIDIA adapter the primary display in
WinXP. When I reboot, the NVIDIA adapter comes up as the boot display and
then the login display. All is well, except that the monitor has a maximum
resolution of 600x800 and a 4-bit (16 colors) color depth. None of the
NVIDIA programs will run.
I've been pulling my hair out trying to troubleshoot this. Any suggestions
are appreciated.
I am not sure about this but do you need to disable the onboard graphics.

Not on a 2400. What you're doing should work. I've done it with an
nVidia FX5500 but not with a 6200. There are two options for video --
don't remember what they are. I'd try both.
When you downloaded the drivers, did you make sure you chose the drives
for the 6xxx series? I'm not sure the latest drivers still support it.
I'd try the oldest drivers you can find.

I forget if the BIOS setup has an option to explicitly use PCI video instead of
"Automatic". If so, use it. If not, update the BIOS perhaps? ... Ben Myers

My dimension 2400 has a bios setting to not use pci cards at all,
check your bios settings (f2 on boot) to be sure it's enabled, and
make sure you have the correct, latest drivers

im having problems installing my fx5500 on a dell dimension 2400. Tom Scales said you did it. I have vista 32 bit and a 350 watt power supply but when i put the card in the pci slot the screen is black when the computer is on and the bios is changed to auto. Computer is currently running the standard vga driver. I have the driver for the geforce but i just cant get it to work. Also, if i leave the bios on "on board" and the nvidia 5500 in the pci slot the computer works but in the device manger it says code 43, the device is disabled. Also with these settings, it says the driver is in conflict with other drivers. any suggestions would be great.

Never tried it with Vista. Can't imagine running Vista on a 2400.
Try it with a monitor plugged into both cards. It took that to get the
drivers properly loaded.
