This morning after starting my Dell Dimension 8100 I noticed the video
output was very dim. Looking at it more closely, it appears to a problem
with the computer (or perhaps software), and not the monitor (which is a
Dell 1702FP) since the monitor control readouts (like brightness and
contrast) appear very bright on the screen, as they should.
Any ideas what might be wrong? A bad video card perhaps or software quirk?
My kids use this computer for playing games and web surfing, and up until
now its worked very reliably.

Is the video output dim all the time, or just after your operating system
has started up?
Some video cards have a tool that can adjust brightness and contrast
independent of the monitor. Look at your display adapter's adjustment
software to see if it allows this.
Even if the internal on-screen displays work, your monitor could still have
a problem. Try it with another computer to be sure.
