Default Dell's free upgrade to Win7 for recent computer purchases

I recently bought a refurbed Studio XPS 435 with Vista Home Premium 64
installed.

I was told I'd be notified when my free upgrade to Win7 (comparable
version) was available. Oct. 22 has come and gone--no word from Dell
yet.

Has anyone heard when one might expect to get this upgrade and be
freed from the bondage of Vista?!

to qualify for the 'free' windows 7 upgrade you have to register on this
site...
https://win7.dell.com/

I signed up for the free windows 7 upgrade on about the 20th of October for
a system that I purchased about 3 weeks ago. I got a confirmation that I
was eligible, but the tracking/shipping information still states that it has
not been sent. Tried emailing them, but have received no response. Good
luck, and keep us informed.

Given the way these promotions were handled when Vista was supposed to
be the news, I'd say that they are presently overwhelmed and
understaffed.

Agreed...and there's bound to be more people looking for Win 7 than were
looking for Vista. Win 7 has gotten overwhelmingly positive reviews.

BTW, I'll repeat my advice anywhere this comes up. Don't do an upgrade. The
clean install takes less than 20 minutes.

I registered when I bought my laptop and thought I'd do a progress
check on Monday; I had to manually enter shipping/billing details (£15
here in the UK) to progress but I'd not had any email telling me that
my DVD was ready to be shipped.

Most odd.

as recently as october 20th pc world reported that dell said it would ship
the updates "after october 22nd"... toshiba announce a delay that would
postpone shipping the discs until december but then clarified that is not
for north america. lenovo says theirs will ship one or two weeks after the
order is received and acers say shipping will be done in increments and in
the order that the requests were received... i suspect they are all coming
from the same place so any delay that one company announces probably applies
to all.

I had purchased an Inspiron Laptop for my daughter in July & registered it
immediately. I assumed that the upgrade disk would be shipped automatically
as soon as Windows7 came out. Since I didn't receive an e-mailto confirm it,
I checked the update site & discovered accidentally that I had to "order"
the upgrade by adding my registered tag to the shopping cart & complete the
purchase. I recall no mention of this process when I registered but I may
have missed something. The order showed $0 until the $13 handling charge
showed up on my credit card for the "free" upgrade. I'm sure that was in the
fine print somewhere but it was a surprise to me. So between needing to
initially order the "Home Premium" edition of Vista to qualify & the $13
handling charge, the "free" Windows7 upgrade cost me $53. I had purchased a
Dell in May 1998 near the end of Windows95 with the same offer for a free
Windows98 upgrade. The disk appeared in the mail about a month later with no
additional charges or intervention on my part.
BTW, I checked the status of the order & it shows a shipping date of
December.

My thanks to you all who responded to this!

I had registered for the upgrade, https://win7.dell.com , when I
received the XPS 435 about two months ago and was then sent an e-mail
stating that I'd be informed (by e-mail) when I might order the
upgrade.

I never received that ready-now message and so after your responses
again checked the order site and placed the order (it indicated no
charge for either shipping or handling).

Just now (2 days later) I again checked the site for status and see
that it's scheduled to be shipped November 4th--to me, I hope!

Seems like we're not all being told the same story about this thing!!

Thanks again, guys!

Hmmm, it's a Dell's left hand doesn't know what Microsoft's right hand
is doing scenario.

My credit card available balance has been reduced (ringfenced) by the
amount of the shipping fees for this "free" DVD......but there's no
indication of when it will arrive (here in the UK, at least).

FWIW, I think it's a Microsoft fu*k up rather than Dell.

Hey ho, we'll wait for the thing to arrive......
