call dell technical support to get the correct part number for a dell
replacement power supply for your system. and ask them to then connect you
with dell spare parts. you can get a replacement power supply for about $30
direct from dell and it comes with a 30 day return policy and 90 day
warranty. the ebay part might be compatible but it is also probably used
and it sounds like it actually costs more than new from dell.

The Dell Dimension 8300, and possibly other systems with motherboards supporting
SATA, uses a power supply with an optional "5/6pin DELL SATA" (as they say)
connector to supply power to two SATA drives. In my experience, some 8300s were
shipped with PATA, others with SATA drives and the optional connector, which is
unique and proprietary to Dell. One can also accomplish the same result with a
pair of inexpensive 12-pin Molex to SATA power cables.
Early SATA disk drives dealt with the possibility of a power supply not
supplying SATA power connectors, and they also had an opening for the
traditional 12-pin white Molex.
In all other respects, the 8300 power supply is a perfect fit for a 4550. IIRC,
the 4550 does not have SATA data connectors on the motherboard. The Dimension
4600 was the first in the 4000-series to support SATA.
Also, except for the 5/6 pin Dell SATA connector, there is no difference between
a standard form factor ATX12v Pentium 4 power supply and a Dell-branded one.
Do not confuse "Replacement Model" with genuine Dell. This could be an
aftermarket power supply, and the quality of these power supplies is all over
the map from pure junk to really good. Ask your eBay seller to tell you the
EXACT brand of the power supply being sold, although the quoted info from the
seller seems to state that the parts are genuine Dell... Ben Myers

Yes, it is. I'm not sure why Dell did so, but on some early models
that could have SATA drives, they put this six pin connector on the
power supply. If you got SATA drives, then an adapter was provided
that plugged into this connector and gave you one or two SATA power
connectors.
I'm not sure why they chose to do it that way. It would have been
cheaper and simpler in the long run to just provide the SATA power
plugs no matter what.
