Default Dell Precision volume and things

Machine = Dell Precision M60 Notebook

I have just carried out the installation of a new HDD and clean install of
XP along with all the Dell software from the CD's supplied. The M60 has a
volume control and a mute button just to the left of the on/off button. The
volume being a rocker type switch. The switch functions but in a previous
life (the old HDD) a small slider icon would appear on screen showing the
volume setting. This does not appear and I have looked through all Control
Panel settings to no avail. Can anyone help to restore it.

While on the topic of new HDD drives, I would like to comment on Seagate
Momentus drives in particular the 2.5" Notebook variety................they
are noticeably noisy compared to Western Digital and Hitachi Travelstar.
The latter 2 drives are more intelligent than the Seagate in their ability
to close down immediately if not being worked. The Seagate will only stop
spinning by the shut down function within the Power Saving settings which
has a minimum setting of 3 minutes. Or is there another way of stopping it
under 3 mins.

thanks

Install QuickSet from Dell, and that should give you the indicator you
are looking for.

I'm not the biggest fan of Seagate drives, but the ST98823AS (of which
seemingly huge numbers have failed) 80GB 2.5" drive from my Macbook
keeps on humming away after I upgraded and put it in an enclosure.

On the other hand, my brother lost a 160GB Seagate drive in his
Macbook...it died overnight while the machine was running.

I don't know of any current model laptop-size hard drives that spin
down unless commanded to by the operating system. It's more likely
that the operating system or an application program is repeatedly
requesting the same or similar data from the drive, which keeps it
from spinning down. In this way, the other makers could have more
"intelligent" drives with more aggressive read caching that would let
them spin down and possibly still provide the requested data.

I've seen some utilities (nothing current) that could issue a spindown
command to a drive.

Keep in mind, however, that each spinup and spindown cycle puts just a
little more wear and tear on the drive.

did you check device manager to make sure you have all your drivers?
it seems like you could be missing a sound driver.
that would cause that icon not to appear.

ok ignore all that what you need is basic computing here , so click on
start, control panel and then choose, sounds and audio devices in that
window half way down will be a line that says "place volume icon in the task
bar" put a tick in that box and then ok out and voila your icon is there

i assumed he tried that.
since he just reinstalled windows fresh,
he probably didnt install the sound drivers.
which do not come in automatically on most dells.

all of this is elementary, once you know how to do it!
