Default Dell Inspiron 6000 Motherboard

Hello,

I hope you can help me ward off insanity. My local computer technician says
that the motherboard needs to be replaced. I see a number of Dell Inspiron
mobo's on eBay, but how do I tell whether they will work in my notebook? Are
they all interchangeable?

Sorry if it is a dumb question.

Desperately,
ljo

I'm stunned that nobody has answered my post - not even to tell me I'm an
idiot.
Please . . can't somebody help me? Thanks.

In general mobos in laptops are not interchangeable. There isn't any way
to tell if any 2 models were the same mobo. The best you could do is
look in the docs for how to replace the mobo and try comparing 2
machines to each other, but it's still a crap shoot.

Well, a couple problems.

1) There are a ton of different I6000 Motherboards. You need one that
is at least similar. For example, there is an I6000 with integrated
graphics and one with a separate graphics card (X300) and the
motherboards are not interchangeable.

2) There is a flaw in the motherboard design where the AC connector
comes lose from the motherboard. It seems to happen eventually to all
of them. Terrible design. I have a dead I6000 sitting in my office
with this problem. My fear is that all the motherboards on eBay have at
least made it most of the way to this happening.

I gave up and bought a new laptop, but that isn't a great solution.

Thanks to you and Pen for your replies. Susequent to my follow-up post I
spoke to two dfferent support guys at Dell and they both assured me that all
Dell Inspiron 6000 mobos are interchangeable with each other. Now I'm more
confused than ever.
Thanks again,
ljo

Well, I suspect they are considering the 6000 and the 6000D to be
separate models. If yours is a 'regular' 6000 that had integrated Intel
Graphics, you should be OK as long as the motherboard 'ad' says it has
integrated graphics.

Well, they do run out of spare parts after a while. The only recourse would
either paying extortion (They often charge more than a complete whole box is
worth) to a main stream parts house or rolling the dice with an eBay purchase...
