Does the dell 2400 have an internal speaker? I've got the case open
on the front and side (sister inlaw's pc) and don't see any. After a
clean XP install with device drivers, I get no sound and I have the
speaker setting to "no" speakers thinking this is for the internal
speaker if it exists. I may have to change that setting to external
speakers and hook one up to test it or I have the wrong device driver
to begin with. Not sure just yet. I'll try to grab an on line manual
if I can find it at dell. thanks.

Ok, I didn't see any picture of a speaker in the manual (pg 50 and 51)
but do see the front panel audio connector (J29 on the motherboard on
pg 51) so I'm assuming there is an internal speaker but it must be
pretty small because I can't see it physically. Therefore same
question, does the 2400 have an internal speaker? If yes, then I
likely have the wrong audio driver... which leads me to another
question... what is the common audio driver for this model? thanks.
There is an internal speaker, but it is used only for beeps. It's a
small black can shape on the motherboard. I think it's near the Intel
southbridge and clock battery.
Check your device drivers and make sure the onboard sound is enabled
in setup. The sound on my Dim2400 worked immediately after installing
the drivers and hooking up speakers.
Hi,
The audio driver for the 2400 is labeled R94481 available here http://tinyurl.com/6ob6pa... Dean

Thanks Dean. I already have it and it says it's enabled in the device
manager. Still no sound (not even beeps) even with the bios sound
enabled so I may just wait till I can hook up an external speaker???
Thanks again !!

Thanks William. I've got the bios sound enabled and installed the
right device driver but can't even get a beep thru the internal
speaker so I'll probably wait till I can get the external speaker
hooked up and see how that goes. Obviously I should get some beep
thru the internal speaker but none so far. It's minor but it bugs me
and I'll keep hammering it out till I get it. Appreciate the help!!

Ok, after banging my head a while I forgot I had a pair of headphones
so I tested this pc and immediately got a sample sound thru the
headphones so I know the sound does work. Not sure why the internal
speaker doesn't work at all (beeps or music) but since she has a set
of externals, I'm not going to worry about it. Now I know her orig
problem of no internet now works (at least at my home on her pc) and
this sound problem doesn't exist so now it's just a matter of
installing whatever software I want to put on it and she's good to go
unless her internet problems lie with Comcast (which I have no control
over). And her pc works much faster now (till her nieces, nephews,
brothers get on it).

It occurred to me that the internal speaker can be turned off in setup
on my Dimension 8300. I'll bet the 2400 has a similar setting.
However, the internal speaker is just a little tiny thing on the
motherboard and it only plays beeps. Nothing from the sound card will
come through it.

Right, there is a setting in the bios but it was turned on as I
checked it earlier. Anyway my sister in law says she wasn't even
aware of this internal speaker since she uses her externals so I won't
worry why I can't get even a beep thru the internal one now. Yeah I'm
curious but not enough now to spend a day more.. I checked all
software settings and bios and all was well so I think the speaker is
burnt or a wire is bad???? Not worth the trouble since she will use
the externals and I tested the sound as good with a pair of head
phones I had. So I expect as soon as I get it back to her house, she
will have sound with her externals hooked up (beeps and music).
I can confirm that, except for the tiny speaker that emits beeps, the Dimension
2400 mobo has no on-board speaker. With connectors both front and rear for
audio in and out, I guess that the designers thoughr one was not needed. As to
why the little speaker does not emit BIOS beeps, I haven't a clue, but I would
never worry about it... Ben Myers
