As far as I know, all IBM machines (including clones) has a PC speaker which
is only good for beeps. Although MS Flight Simulator III (came out around
1988 I think) did a so-so job making engine sounds from it.

Remember PCs with sound cards were unheard of back in the 80's and very
early 90's. So the only sounds you had was error beeps and that was it.
Things has really changed since then. LOL

Thanks Ben for the vote of confidence. If I had more time, I'd try
to dig into it further but since it's not my pc and my sister in law
would like it back asap, it's not worth the trouble in her case (and
as you pointed out). I'm still impressed with the dim2400. After a
fresh install (XP) and some software, it zips right along. I didn't
even bother to see how much ram there was in it and now I just
disconnected everything so if I remember I'll check it at her house
but regardless it works nice (before all the evil hands get back on it
again).

Thanks Ben again.

Everyone here in this thread agrees with you so I believe you <g>.
I can't get it to beep tho but I gave up on it because she (my sister
in law) won't use it anyway (she'll use external spkrs) so I don't
want to waste her time probing into this when she can use it now using
the ext. spkrs. I'm sure if I had more time, I'd find out but as Ben
pointed out, the beeps aren't that important. There more like a
diagnostic tool anyway.

thanks Bill.

If the evil hands get onto the computer again, remember you have two choices:

1. Get new in-laws. There are special upgrade programs for this, with liberal
trade-ins.
2. Charge them good money the next time.

Inform them of the choices when you take the system back to them, so there will
be no surprises in the future. If you fix a mess for free next time, you are
being taken advantage of and unreasonably.

I hate to sound a little bit like Ann Landers here, but... Ben Myers

Wish I could charge but long story.
Any way I brought the pc back and plugged everything in and it worked
like a charm. For some reason I thought I had all the drivers but I
was missing her dell AIO 920 printer so I got that on line at her
house and installed it and then tested the printer and it worked fine.
I tested the speakers using the sample sounds in the control panel and
the external speakers worked fine. She was so grateful she said she
could get me a lot of her BP friends but I told her no. I told her I
didn't want any customers. I just want to help those I choose to
help. I'm just happy to be able to do it. IIt's my way of trying to
pay back the kindness some have given me.

And to try to answer you Ben, I used a Secure Zone in Acronis True
Image 10 with a password so I can hopefully restore from there the
next time which should make it easier for me (with fingers crossed).
In theory it's just a hidden partition with an image file that the OS
can't access but you know how murphy's law works. I've had things go
wrong before when in theory it should have worked so that's why I said
with fingers crossed. I guess I can always do what I did earlier
today if her pc gets messed up again (I hope).

Thanks Ben again for your help and support !!

I don't think my 2400 has ever beeped in the 5 years I've owned it.

The Optiplex GX620, oddly, has an internal speaker that IS connected to
the sound card. It's tinny and almost impossible to hear, but it works.

Might have a 'beep' speaker, but nothing connected to the soundcard.

Thanks Tom. I couldn't get it to beep either and for the sake of
practicality I gave up. But I did try for about 45 minutes at first.
