Default Dell 1405 comes out of standby with a blank screen

Core Duo, Vista Home Premium

When the lid is closed, it goes to standby (that's how it's set).

However, half the time I'll open the lid and though the screen
illumination (background lighting) is ON, the screen itself is
dark. The only way I've found to get the screen back to normal
is to force a shutdown and then reboot.

??

My Latitude 610 used to do this, either in W2K or Suse Linux. I was
less lucy than you , yours works half the time. Mine never did. I
downloaded all the suggested patches and updates and nothing ever
changed it.
