Dell systems cannot be overclocked by normal means. Now, if you'd like to
redesign the motherboard a bit and break out your soldering iron, I'm sure it is
possible.

As a rule, name brand systems and Intel-brand motherboards cannot be
overclocked. If you want to try overclocking, build your own system and buy a
motherboard that allows you to change the front side bus speed. I cannot speak
for AMD CPUs, but just about every Intel CPU since the late Pentium 3 days has
had its clock-multiplier locked, so juicing up the FSB is pretty much the only
way to overclock. Some motherboards allow you to alter memory timings to goose
more speed out of a system... Ben Myers

I wonder if any one has written software to change Dell's BIOS to allow FSB
tinkering?

Doubtful. There might be some freeware OC utilities that could possibly work,
but don't get high hopes... Ben Myers

Yes.

Build if you want to OC.

No, the system is not locked. There is a way to get the Q6600 to 3.0 ghz
with a rear window defroster repair kit (automotive) by connecting two
pins on the CPU. I have a Dell 530 and successfully have mine running
for the last 2 months at 3.0 with the Dell supplied heat sink. You will
have to Google on how to overclock the Q6600 but remember, dell will no
longer honor the warranty once you have ******* with the CPU.

"rear window defroster repair kit (automotive)"???? Could LouieG be making a
joke here? I always that that overclocking was accomplished by placing one's
computer over a clock, or even a watch, which is a small clock... Ben Myers

Nope, you use the repair kit to make a connection across two pins,
increasing the fsb up to 1333, as shown here
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=532207. This basically shows
that you have very little knowledge it this sort of thing and should
butt out.

You're right. I'll keep it that way. Overclocking with hardware mods is not on
my list of things to learn. One screwup in making the mod and the hardware is
history. Running hardware beyond its rated spec is not for me either. But you
have to admit that "rear window defroster repair kit (automotive)" without
further explanation has raised other pairs of quizzical eyebrows in addition to
mine... Ben Myers
