I'm probably getting a E520 system and wanted to know if I could
easily move the floppy drive from my Dell 8400 to the E520 upon
arrival? Likewise will the black faceplate I take off of the E520 fit
back in the 8400 where the floppy drive was located?

Yes and no.
You can pull the FDD from the 8400 and remove the (green) quick-release
rails and then mount it in the E520 w/o issue.
The faceplate/bezel blank for the FDD in the E520 will not fit into the
8400, however.
As an option, floppy drives can be bought retail very inexpensively (Dell
charges about $30 for one on a new system):

I would just get a cheap USB external floppy drive.

Yes, for the infrequent use that a floppy sees these days, a USB floppy drive is
just fine. Modern systems support booting from a USB floppy, too. The only
tiny drawback is that it is a dust catcher. One other plus is that it can be
shared among systems... Ben Myers

In MY case, I was going to sell an old XP system w/ floppy built-in
and get an ext. floppy drive instead but after I realized what it
might cost me overall, I decided it was more advantagous for the time
being to keep the system (even if antiquated as long as it can still
run xp) instead. And its still available to my home network so why
get rid of it. In time I'll get rid of all but maybe 1 or 2 pc's at
home and the rest will be laptops.
