It appears that Dell has dropped the ATI CableCard tuners. They offered
them for the last two weeks (yes, two weeks) of the XPS 410 life and now
the 420 doesn't offer them. I'm interested as it is the only way to
record Premium cable channels.
In chats with Dell, they're clueless. They keep trying to tell me to
buy one separately and can't get it through their heads that CableLabs
ONLY approves them for sale as part of a complete system and that it
requires a special version of Vista.
Some smaller vendors offer computers with the tuners, but at outrageous
pricing.

Probably not a useful thought, but is there a way of doing this using
a Mac? From what you said once Apple TV isn't much of a solution for
anything (except watching proprietary content from Apple?), but I'm
not sure if anything else good exists.
When you say "special version of Vista", do you mean in addition to
Basic, Premium, Business, Ultimate?

What's special about the Vista version?
Perhaps Dell actually could sell one of the cards along with a system under
the notion that you'd put the two together when they arrived? While
CableLabs might not like it, I'm not so sure they could do anything to stop
you buying one of these cards if someone was able to sell you one.

ATI makes the only tuner that is capable and it isn't Mac supported (at
least yet).
As for the 'special' versions, they are versions of Home Premium and
Ultimate with 'digital support'.
Yes, and there is much buzz about the fact that Sony is listing it as an
available standalone accessory.
The only problem is that it has NEVER been in stock

The only thing special is that it supports the tuner. I have no idea
why it is a separate version.

Yes, that article references the previous post with a link to Sony. I
suspect someone in Sony marketing put that up and they just haven't
taken it down. As far as I can tell from reading around the web, they
haven't actually sold one.

Those things aren't cheap. I guess it doesn't matter if you can't get
one.
