I'm trying to put together a laptop for a relative who will use it for
Internet and WORD - no heavy graphics or music. I'm looking at a Vostro
1720 on the Small Business site and an Inspiron 17 through the employee
purchase plan. Generally speaking, is there any great difference between
the quality of the Vostro and Inspiron?
The Vostro has an Intel Core 2 duo T6670 while the Inspiron has the T4200.
Will there be any noticible difference between these two processors?
The Vostro has a WXGA+anti glare LED display while the Inspiron has an
HD+LED display. Are these the same?
Would there be any benefit of getting 4 gigs of shared memory over 3 gigs?

The specifications you are speaking of are overkill for internet
browsing and Microsoft Word. Just about any laptop can easily handle
that, so buy what's on sale this week.
I suggest you save your relative some money and buy a netbook.

I agree! And while some dislike the small screens and keyboards... I
have sort of a solution for some (one that I use often). As while
running portable, you just have to put up with it. Although at home, you
can connect them up to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. For
light duty tasks, one can't tell they are not using a big beefy desktop.
Except you have a lot more space and it is much quieter. Especially the
SSD models. If this just won't do, there are inexpensive 15.4 inch
laptop screens too. Larger than this tends to go way up in price.

To answer the questions you asked, there is little difference they are
each the entry
level machines for their particular sites. The T6670 is a newer cpu
version and is faster
than the T4200 by about 20%. The screens you will have to look at
yourself as it's a personal
preference matter. However, if it's to be used indoors there is little
practical difference.
There is no point to the additional memory if the operating system is 32
bit XP and/or win7.

I pretty much agree with your other replies. 4 vs 3 gigs won't make
much difference for XP and I think the same for windows 7. Besides
for the tasks you mentioned, you probably don't even need 2 gigs so 3
should be plenty.
It seems fairly obvious that you will benefit in some way from that link
being clicked. Now, if that's really an upstanding retailer (don't
know/don't care/have not checked), there is nothing wrong with that.
However, you would do well to be upfront about it and mention that you will
be compensated in some way when others click that link. (And you might be
required to do that anyway, so check the terms that you agreed to.)

with a 15" wide screen Inspiron.
