Early Wed morning, while cruising the web, I suddenly got hit by over a
dozen viruses, all at the same time. For every minute since, I've been
trying to find and eliminate the attacking
viruses. I'm about 80% there, but can go no further.....and my browser is
hijacked to weird sites whenever I try to use it.
Before you say "I told you so," please note that I was running AVG
Anti-virus, As Aware SE, Spy Blocker, Panicware Pop-Up blocker and a
firewall......and I still got my clock cleaned. It also took out System
Restore, installed exe files in numerous places, and whacked me good.
So far, in 3 days, using "HijackThis," AVG, and AVAST, I'm about 80% back, I
have System Restore back, but my browser is still getting hijacked. Email
and programs are not affected, just the internet.
I am not a computer expert like you guys. I'm a older high school teacher,
disabled by a "mini-stroke" who lives in a tiny town in the middle of
nowhere. There is no one within 50 miles of here who knows how to fix a PC
problem like mine.
I wrote an email to a good guy who is a regular in this group, and he said
that I could post my problem here, as you know computers inside out and I
know nothing.
My computer is a very plain Dell Dimension 8300 running Windows XP
Home...nothing special.
At this point, I have no idea of what to do. I have the "Hijack This"
printout, but I don't know how to read it.
I've exhausted my options. Any and all suggestions would be both welcomed
and appreciated. If you are familiar with reading a "Hijack This" log file
and could tell me what to do, that would be fantastic.
If you are willing to help me out, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks
in advance. Jim

restore from you back up..............you do have a back up don't you.
Hi -- first, it's good to see someone post a lot of details when
asking for help.
Can I ask where you picked up the viruses? My reason for asking is so
that I can be wary and prepared. I have never heard of someone
getting hit by over a dozen viruses all at the same time. It sounds
like you got caught in an asteroid storm!
I would backup data and do a fresh install. If viruses have
penetrated so thoroughly that you are spending "every minute since"
Wed morning, then your time would probably be better spent doing a
fresh install of the OS. If what you described happened to me, after
an initial attempt at trying to fix the problems using the tools you
mention, I'd go straight to doing a fresh install.
I realize that doing a complete refresh might seem more daunting than
trying to fix the problem. There were many years when I would never
have considered trying that. The biggest drawback is that if you try
doing a reinstall and you run into problems, it doesn't sound like
there is anyone close by that could help you resolve them.
As long as you have your data, and everything needed to reinstall your
OS and applications, you will have that as a fallback option if you
can't resolve it in some other way.

If you mean do I have a separate system that makes an exact copy of my
entire computer system every day, then no, I don't.
If you mean do I have back up copies of all of my files, like mp3's, photos,
text documents, programs, etc.....yes, I have those on DVD.
My situation hasn't affected any of my programs or files, just my browser.

Thanks for your input, but I have never installed an OS on a computer
before....I wouldn't even know how to start.
I just need to find one nasty file that is knocking my browser out of
whack....and delete it.
As for where I was browsing around when I got hit, I really can't remember,
as I was scrambling to hit the "Heal" button on my screen. I think that I
was looking for a review on the imdb, which is a pretty popular, rock solid,
site.
As for getting hit so many times, I agree with you, it had never happened to
me before. From the error log, I was able to see that as soon as I "healed"
a virus, the same one would just bounce back in. One got "healed/deleted"
four times.

perhaps a windows repair using the original OSCD might sort it out. Are you
using IE6 or 7.

I appreciate your input. I have IE6. I know that I could probably find the
original OSCD, as I haven't thrown it away or anything, but my Dimension is
a 2003 model, so I'd have to dig around for it. Do you think that I could
upgrade the browser and take care of the problem?

Thanks for mentioning that. I've already run Hijack and have the log sheet.
My problem is that I can't tell what on there is ok and what on there is a
virus.
I was told that I could Google them for removal instructions, but, as
aforementioned, I don't know what to look for. I found one that looked
suspicious, and I Googled it, and it as in French (no kidding).
I'd pay someone to look at that log and say, "Oh, yeah, you need to remove
this one and that one." That would solve all my problems instantly. But, I
can't find anyone who is willing to do that.
Above, you said, "best bet is to run hijack this, and anything else
in safe mode (f8) and then empty the recycle bin before rebooting your
computer, also any particular virusus that are proving difficult." I think
that it is great that you can do that, but I don't have the knowledge to
just look at a file name and know that it is a virus that should be deleted.
I would suggest you look into FireFox as an alternative to IE.
Bottom line, though, is that your system should really be rebuilt. I
understand your limitations, but your system has been so compromised
that it's doubtful that you'll ever get it completely "safe".
Regards,
Hank Arnold
