With my bluetooth mouse (mentioned in a previous post) it takes a
short time to wake up. I think bluetooth might also use more battery
power. For those reasons, except for the mouse I mentioned, I have
gone with laser over bluetooth.

Take this with a grain of salt -- I don't know for sure that bluetooth
uses up more power. Part of the reason I believe that is that
initially the bluetooth mouses came with a charger, but the charger
was also a hub. They were probably packaged that way because many
systems at that time didn't have bluetooth, and having a charger / hub
increased the marketability.

The only reason I have a bluetooth mouse is because one of my laptops
has only 2 USB ports and I need both ports for USB TV Tuner / PVRs
(and they don't work through a hub). If it had more ports I would be
using the laser mouse and not bluetooth.

Most laptops these days have 3 or 4 USB ports which is usually more
than enough.

"Laser" and "Bluetooth" are not mutually exclusive. "Laser" has
to do with surface tracking, as in "optical". "Bluetooth" has to do
with the radio communication protocol and hardware specs.
(See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth).

I suspect that "small dongle" equates to "small antenna", and thus
shorter range than with a larger dongle. With my Dell BT Travel Mouse,
there is smooth pointer movement up to a line-of-sight range or 12 to
14 feet. After that, the pointer gets jerky. For keyboards, I wouldn't
*want* a range longer than that - for security reasons.

agree!

More appropriate terms are Bluetooth vs RF

Hm..sure abt that?

The specs on it say 2.4 gig frequency...... which is
the band that wireless keyboard work on as well

Ahh I see

My laptop only has two USB ports as well as it more of
a business type laptop than consumer

It does have built in BT tho and the only reason I was
thinking abt the BT mouse was to AVOID the LONG USB
dongle of other wireless mice. But I just came back
from Staples and looked at the Nano and that dongle is
really small so have no problems going with it after
all! Thanks for the heads up!

Well... both Bluetooth and "RF" use radio waves - even in the
same frequency range. They differ in their modulation techniques.

I'm fairly sure, but I would happily like to be proven wrong. The
reason why I don't use an external keyboard with my laptop is for 2
reasons:

1) It's a ThinkPad and has a great keyboard

2) When I want to use a keyboard and mouse with my laptop at home I
connect to it from my desktop using Remote Desktop Connection.

My terminology in this thread wasn't very good but I think you
understood that I was referring to "bluetooth" and "non-bluetooth /
USB".

Neat! What is the link between the PCs? PC-to-PC Wi-Fi or via
a Wi-Fi router? How is the lag?

My desktop computer is connected to my router with a Cat6 cable. My
PC laptops are 802.11g. The Remote Desktop connection has great
response with no noticeable lag. You need certain versions of Windows
in order to connect to a PC:

- XP Pro or Media Center
- Vista Business or Ultimate (not Home Premium)

I have two 24" monitors attached to my desktop computer so it's great
to access my laptop from my desktop. I love the Ultrasharp 24"
monitor -- a lot of connections. But I digress ...
