Default AVG9.0 free

Well, you may have to turn off link scanner and resident shield, lest your computer's
performance go to zero.

That may be enough to make it useable. Time will tell.

I intuit that the resident shield marks the directory entries somehow to indicate
whether a write has taken place since the last scan, which process in setup
(``do you want to optimize scans now or wait for the first scan'' or some such words)
takes a long time and steals your computer for the duration; and then again after you
wrest control back in an hour or so and turn off resident shield. Just a guess what's
happening. So select "wait" and then go and turn off resident shield, would be my next
try if I were to do it again, and avoid the two hours of crap.

Link scanner slows things enough to cause Total Recorder to fail to connect and go into
retry loops, so that goes out too.

I only scan once a year or so, so optimizing scans isn't a win for me. Never found a
virus.

Resident shield also seems to really slow down copying camera pics to the HD, which at
a hundred pics a day is a real drag.

So, summary: select "wait" and turn off resident shield; turn off link scanner.

YMMV

I saw AVG 9.0 offered today on the Dim8400. Based on your report, I think
I'll wait a while and see how things shake out.

After a day, there's been no further trouble with AVG9.0
(ie. resident shield and link scanner disabled).

That seems to be its benign setting.

Recently I tried some various anti virus software and while I liked
some of the features, some just ate too much resources without
unchecking some ot their nifty features or were just too slow for my
taste. Therefore I can understand you not installing linkscanner.
Unfortunately I guess doing this weakens the protection but I
understand you doing this because what good is a system that's almost
frozen. So more and more I will rely on my backups and I like the
secure zone feature in Acronis.

gets you a-squared free (only on 11/11); I have no affiliation with
them, just stumbled across it on a freebie website, can't say whether
the product is any good or not?

Thanks Gary. I tried it and I remember at first being impressed with
it but right now I'm not using it. I forgot why I uninstalled it now
so maybe I'll give it another try. Like yourself, I stumbled upon it
too. Thanks again Gary for reminding me.
