We just go 5 1720 B&W laser printers. I'm trying out the first one and
one very annoying "feature" is a large pop-up that appears whenever I
print to the printer. It shows a large vertical bar that is supposed to
represent the ink remaining.
I can't find where to turn this off. I really don't need it.Any one know
how to turn it off?

remove all the programs from memory that give the status.
remove them from the startup with a program like hijackthis or autoruns.

uninstall the printer driver, disconnect the printer, and start over
following the instructions found under 'installing the printer driver only'
found on this dell faq page for you printer... http://tinyurl.com/299wn8

Have you checked the add/remove programs in control panel? There
should be a Dell Printer Software Uninstall - uninstall the Dell Toner
Management...might say Printing Status Monitor or Dell Toner Re-Order
App. depending on the model.

Not *that* is annoying... ;-)... I was hoping that it was like the HP
drivers where you can turn it on or off... :-(

reading the manual before installing is always annoying
but seriously, i generally look for the 'printer driver only' method of
installing printers. i don't need the ink monitor or other utilities
popping up and running in the background. it seems to me that these are
essentially a way for manufacturers to keep advertising for themselves and
provide little other value. i particularly dislike hp inkjets because you
have to install their monitor software which is part and parcel of the
driver (though, as you pointed out, you can configure it to tone down the
amount of messages it reports).

What ended up working was in Add.Remove Programs, I could "Modify" the
Dell Printer Software entry. Turned off the alert function and that was it.
Thanks again, all for the responses
