Had two calls for help to work on some Dell computers this past week. Both
owners complained of a lost internet connection, one an Inspiron with wifi and
the other wired. The ISP tech support person told the owner of the wired
internet connection that the Ethernet card (on board Ethernet in a Dimension
8250) had to be replaced.
I solved the first one with a little thinking and the second one became real
easy, because I'd seen the same problem one day earlier. I shut down Zone Alarm
and the internet suddenly worked. I uninstalled ZA, then installed the latest
version, and the internet still worked. Problem solved.
Yesterday, exactly the same thing happened to my non-Dell desktop computer, and
I did the same thing.
Checkpoint, current owners of Zone Alarm, on its web site states: "Installation
of Microsoft Update KB951748 may result in loss of Internet connectivity." In
other words, blame Microsoft. Maybe they are right, but the whole thing smells
of a coercive effort to get people to look at their web site and maybe buy some
products. To download Zone Alarm, you have to wade through quite a few pages of
ad blurbs.
I have used Zone Alarm for quite a few years, and I must say that it has helped
keep my main computer trouble-free. Now my faith in Checkpoint has been shaken
somewhat... Ben Myers

I too have had ZA for a long time and I agree with you. However as
soon as I read that problem on the net, I was surprised I didn't see
it on my systems and then I realized why. I reconfirmed my faith in
why I don't let MS update my systems (let them blindly change my
system... heck no). I have more confidence in my 3rd party software
protecting me (some overlap coverage if I allow it to) then MSs
un-ending updates trying to give me a false sense of security. In
fact today I did something stupid and my system saved itself from me
<g>. And right now as I type this post, ZA kicked in and said to me
to allow it to scan for spyware as I see I somehow just caught at
least one. Don't recall this happening before but I trust ZA. So I
like my system with ZA suite and Avast. I'm not implying I'm bullet
proof but rather adequately protected.
And like another poster said (more or less), your problem was well
documented on the net hours after it first occured. Anyway I know
you've been around long enough like myself to know one of the first
things to check is the firewall with lost connections. Glad you
got it solved for your customers' sake.
There was a screwup. Blame ZA or MS, but it's a moot point. ZA came out with
a very nice fix. They did it quickly.
Problem solved.

I know of at least one WISP has documented the problem incorrectly that ZA
is a hidden app in the latest MS update/ their solution is to tell the to
customers remove ZA or they will not be able to further assist them with
thier connectivity issues.
Just goes to show you that ISP tech support cannot be trusted, which most of us
here have known for a long time. The only reason Zone Alarm would be buried in
a Windows update would be if Microsoft bought the package to replace their own
crappy firewall. And if Microsoft bought Zone Alarm, you would see the
attitudes of ISPs toward ZA changing real fast... Ben Myers

Sad part is the tech's know the info is not correct, but they also know
unemployment sucks.....
A lot of third world tech have the same issues, but when you live in company
housing, shop in the company store and eat in the company cafeteria, you
follow the company line. 10 hours a day, 6 day's a week....
