Hey!
I"m looking for a decent set of speakers for my sons E521 that has a
basic Audigy card in it. The Dell sound bar isn't an option at this
point. He likes playing games. Just need a little help selecting a
decent but not bank breaking 5.1 set of speaks. HELP!
Thanks - ZaXXoN

I recommend reading the Amazon reviews, and looking at all the models
that Logitech offers.
I like this $96 option from Logitech. It's 2.1 but has great sound,
better than most 5.1's:
Logitech Z-2300 THX-Certified 200-Watt 2.1 Speaker System
I have a pair shipping free to me for $109 (including shipping). To
get the best price I usually do a Google search then click on one of
the price comparison options. Buy.com has them for $119 with free
shipping, and you can choose Google Checkout to get $10 off. Note:
just use a different e-mail address and you can always get $10 off
when purchasing from buy.com.

By the way, the Soundsticks on Buy.com are here, and this is the
review page -- you seldom see so many 5 of 5 reviews. I have heard
these speakers at a local Mac store (typically they sell for $169) and
they are great, esp. for $109.
Hey!
Thanks for your input about speaks. I like the sticks! Don't think my
girlfriend would want them on our son's desk but, I may just get them
and gut them to paint them black and give them a Dell Logo!

Glad you like the sticks. I should get mine any day now so I'll see
how they sound at home. I have the Logitech 2.1 THX speakers I
mentioned in my dining room, and an older set of Dell 5.1's in my
living room acting as my "home entertainment" speakers.
Amazon sells an inexpensive (~ $5) converter to take stereo output and
channel it to 5.1's. For about $40, when on sale, Logitech sells both
a headphone jack and USB out version to stream wirelessly to a remote
speaker system. All of it amounts to a very inexpensive way to have
music streamed from any source to any destination.
If you still want to go with 5.1's, definitely read the Amazon and
other reviews and if possible see if a local store sells them so that
you can see and hear what they are like firsthand. Often buy.com
sells speakers at a good price -- case in point the Soundsticks for
$109 w free shipping vs. $169 retail or about that considering that
Amazon and other online retailers charge shipping for speakers of that
size.
Some of the 5.1's stream to the rear speakers wirelessly. I think the
rear speakers are plugged into AC. From some reviews I've read the
first versions have had some bugs such as popping noises.
The thing I most don't like about my setup is that when I use my
computer 5.1 speakers in my living room with my HDTV, I can't control
the volume on the external speakers. If I had a real entertainment
system set of speakers I could control the volume which is something I
miss being able to do.

To follow up, the Soundstick II's are good speakers esp. at low and
medium volume. I use them in my living room next to the chair where I
sit with my iPod and laptops and they work well for that but they
wouldn't be my main speaker system.
No thanks -- there is nothing your company makes that I would take
even if you sent it to me for free. Sorry to be so blunt about it --
it all looks very junky and there are better products for everything
that you sell.
