Who determined a surge entered on phone lines? Even A+ Certified
computer techs need not know how electricity works. Did a computer
tech (most don't know how electricity works) make that determination?
Of did he just use popular myth to promote wild speculation?

Well if that surge entered on phone line, and harmed a motherboard,
then where was that surge outgoing? No outgoing path means no modem
and motherboard damage. So what was the outgoing path? Did he know
power supplies contain protection? Did that surge go outgoing through
the power supply? Then power supply protection was also destroyed.
Why was a damaged power supply not replaced? What was the outgoing
path that always must exist; must be known to declare a surge incoming
on phone lines?

Most techs will assume modems are damaged by surges incoming on
phone lines only because the myth is popular and promoted just like
Saddam's WMDs. If a surge entered on phone line, then that tech
strongly recommended fixing the telco installed protector. Did he do
that? Most techs don't even know that protector exists due to
insufficient electrical knowledge. . He could not recommend fixing a
protector that he did not know exists at every home. This is the guy
who somehow knows a surge entered on phone lines?

Most modems are damaged by a surge incoming on AC mains, through
motherboard, then out to earth ground via modem and telephone line.
Sound familiar? Your symptoms are classic of a surge incoming on AC
mains; outgoing via phone lines. Many if not most all computer techs
would say that surge was incoming on phone line due to insufficient
electrical knowledge. No electrical knowledge is necessary to become
an A+ Certified computer tech. So who 'determined' the surge was
incoming on phone lines - a popular myth.

Have you had a chance to take a look at the computer yet? Just curious,
wondering if you were able to find out what the problem was.

Quick check for external surge entry point: Check you phone and the telco
demarcation box. With most modern telephone equipment the electronic will
be just as fried as the computer.
