Acronis True Image 11 on a Dell Dim 3000 with XP, won't allow hibernate or
I have a Dell DIM 3000 running XP and a newer DIM 9220 running Vista.
Rather than installing Acronis True Image on the Vista- I thought I'd try it
out on the XP system.
After installing it, without even running the program, I tried to turn the
system off by hibernating- but it failed to proceed- for hours- nor will it
"stand by". But, it will do a full shut down OK.
So, then I uninstalled the program- but before it got far in in the
uninstallation process- the system went into hibernation! I turned it back
on- and it was still in the middle of the uninstallation process- it
proceeded to uninstall OK- then I could use hibernate again.
Anybody have a clue what's going on? I did nothing with the program. I know
that some of its functions can "fool with" the OS, writing to the book
sectors, etc.-- which is why I wanted to slowly learn this program to see
what problems might arise before putting it on my newest system.
Re: Acronis True Image 11 on a Dell Dim 3000 with XP, won't allowhibernate or
Comment: I never have thought much of various disk imaging programs,
*especially* Ghost. It's my hope that Acronis True Image is better,
because I am looking for such a tool for a project in the near future.
But more seriously...does Acronis True Image have any kind of support
for "virtual disks"? I'm thinking along the lines of a low level
driver that would provide access to disk image files as though they
were real disks.
Windows queries programs before allowing a standby or hibernation to
take place. (It also issues a different query for shut down, restart
and log off requests.) If that request is not approved by all
programs, processes and device drivers, it won't happen. Likewise,
I've also seen drivers and programs that could "stall" a request until
they stopped running.

While I don't use True Image, I'm not surprised that the program might
affect both standby and hibernation modes.
Just think of what might happen if your hard disks "turned off" during an
automated/scheduled copy operation.
Potentially very un-good.
I don't use any Windows power management features (other than monitor sleep)
on any of my desktops as I have a level of distrust for those functions.

I have had various problems with a computer when it wakes up after
sleep, but nothing serious. The most annoying one right now is that
the display resolution changes on a laptop.
Standby mode is a very important feature for my laptop use. I haven't
used it much for my desktop PC but I wonder over time how much
electricity I may have used by keeping it on all the time, as well as
wearing down components like the fan that I had to have replaced a few
days ago.

I've experienced the same problem on two new laptops. Try going into power
options in control panel and reset it to default values. Worked for me
every time..

Thanks! It worked! I will modify the power settings and if it recurs
I will then try to narrow it down to what causes it. Very happy for
this fix, thanks.
