3gb vs. 2gb ram for Vista (later) in a dell laptop
Currently have a E1405 (XP) with 1 gb ram.
In case I later change to Vista, is there much "noticeable" difference
in performance whether I choose 2gb vs. 3gb ram later in this E1405 ?
I'm sure 3 is better but is it really that noticeable vs. 2 gb in
Vista ?
Re: 3gb vs. 2gb ram for Vista (later) in a dell laptop
wait until you are ready to go with vista before getting the extra ram.
prices are coming down constantly.
you may find that its better to sell the whole laptop while it still has
good value, and get something better.

I have a 4GB XPS 410 desktop. I have a feeling that if I went down to
2GB I would not notice any difference at all. You might notice a
difference if you do extensive gaming or video editing but even then
I am not so sure.
Also, I think I read somewhere that it's best to install pairs of
memory with the same capacity.

As Jay indicated, it might be good to try to sell the whole laptop now
and get something better. You could try Craig's List.
When selling something it's a good way to also eliminate clutter, i.e.
items that you don't need, so throw in some other things like a 250GB
external drive, extra monitor, etc.
If listing on Craig's List, definitely indicate remaining warranty
time if that might be a selling point. That's very important for
laptop users.
Check the outlet for whatever computer you would want to replace the
1405 with if should you be willing to sell it.

Nope. In my opinion, 2GB is the sweet spot. Pretty much all my Vista
machines run with 2GB

Why do I need to replace the E1405 (no argument just curious)?
It works for me fine tho I have not yet put Vista on it so that's why
I want to put 2 gb ram in it rather the 1 gb in it before running
Vista. I don't do any gaming and do a little video editing once in a
great while.
But outa curiousity, what is a better 14" laptop over the E1405 and
why?
Re: 3gb vs. 2gb ram for Vista (later) in a dell laptop
as you said, there's nothing wrong with the e1405.
but like some people like to lease cars every 3 years, and get a new
one, some people like to upgrade their computer equipment every 2-3
years. so by selling the old one, your net difference could be about
equal to the amt of the upgrade you may be planning on making. you
gotta consider everything in your decision. everyone is different.

Thanks Jay. I wasn't trying to be cute just really curious why I
needed to change. I didn't see a need to change it but I was
considering replacing a 600m possibly (if I don't upgrade its hard
drive first) so that's why I was wondering what is better than the
E1405 as a 14" laptop (might give the E1405 to a daughter and take the
newer for myself).

You don't need to change. Someone else can chime in but I think
there's a reason why it's good to install pairs of memory chips with
the same size. Crucial indicates that on its web site (but they are
also in the business of making sales so whether that should be taken
in context I don't know).
So, you were potentially looking at spending either for one 2GB RAM
module, or two 2GB RAM modules. Depending on the price of those, you
may come out ahead or with an acceptable upgrade cost.
Your best bet is probably to keep your 1405 and add 1 GB of memory.
You would not likely notice any improvement over 2GB total RAM.

A 2gb kit (1gb x 2 )of PC5300 PC2 SODIMMs runs a little over $95 at crucial
right now.
I'll probably go for this upgrade for the Lenovo I just bought with
WinVistaHomePremium.
