I just installed Vista Ultimate on a Dimension 9200 E6600 with 1GB.
Pretty powerful machine. I've had Vista on a matching D9200, but that
machine has 2GB.
Anyway, the 1GB machine is barely useable even with simple apps. Open
up more than a few windows and it slows to a crawl. The same apps on
the 2GB machine were pretty snappy.
yep you got it now

Word to your mother.
The biggest compliment I can give to the new OS is that the Enterprise
version (some 500mb smaller image size) is *tolerable* on my
CoreDuo/2gb/integrated video notebook.
Ditto on disabling indexing. I turned it on a day or so ago then
forgot that I had turned it on, and today I was wondering why my hard
drive was constantly being accessed -- I thought it was a virus or
something.
Then I saw this post and made the connection. In addition to being a
resource hog, I bet indexing also puts a lot of stress on a hard
drive. I bet now that I turned it off the constant access of my hard
drive will go away.

That's been the recommendation of most tech folks since the betas
started showing up.
If you want a real head-banger situation, try installing and running in
512MB!! I tried it out for laughs in a VMWare session on my PC at work
(trying to start looking at Vista Business). Kinda reminded me of
running Windows 2000 in 256MB.... :-(

I agree that for optimal performance you need 2GB. However, I bought my
Inspiron 1720 with 1GB fully expecting to have to upgrade immediately and
was surprised that this was not the case. Though performance improved
significantly when I put in another GB, the machine ran OK under Vista
Premium with office apps, internet and some light photo editing. I didn't
find performance to be that bad at all. I also turned off indexing. When I
turned off all the Aero features (many of which I don't like anyway), the
machine ran fine. I'm not a gamer so I can't speak from that perspective.
