I'd expect to see the T7200 price come down. Prices on desktop Core 2
Duos were just dropped 2 weeks ago (the price of the E6600 was cut by
one-third, from about $310 to about $230). Also, NEXT WEEK, there is a
major new laptop platform coming out, "Centrino Pro" (aka "Santa Rosa"),
with some major changes and a new laptop chipset (which might be a
reason for waiting, in and of itself).

That definitely is a reason to at least hold out for the T7200. Santa
Rosa will be very expensive when it is introduced. There will always
be something new on the horizon. So, I'll wait and probably end up
with a T7200 in the next few weeks. I'm not willing or able to spend
top dollar for the latest and greatest but do want something good and
fast.

Unless it's a Sempron or Celeron, it's all "good and fast" at this point
really. Anything in a Core2 Duo with adequate RAM capacity is going to be
fast.

It's a matter of personal preference I suppose.

If you decide to get a desktop, I strongly recommend the Dell outlet.
I am very happy with the XPS 410, and I got a great deal. I put 4G
RAM in the search criteria and was surprised when I found a great
system with everything I wanted. About the only thing it didn't have
were two 250G hard drives arranged in RAID (note: I don't really know
what RAID is but it sounds like it would be useful lol). It had one
250GB hard drive. I added two more, and now am looking for a deal on
a drive with more capacity. I will probably hold out for a good deal
on a 750G drive. It's amazing how, if one is patient, great "tech"
products can be had at low prices. I've bought almost all of my
gadgets that way. I would never pay anything close to retail for a
digital camera for example.

P.S. -- your laptop is XP, correct? If you do get a desktop, you can
learn about Vista.

As far as for an entertainment center, I'd recommend considering
putting the money towards a big-screen TV rather than a desktop
computer. For me I need a desktop computer anyway and right now don't
want to spend for a TV. If your laptop satisfies your computing
needs, a good TV might be a better use of your money. Some TVs can
actually double as a computer monitor, but I don't know how well they
work for that.

If you do go the computer route, the 24" widescreen monitor that Dell
offers is excellent.

InterVideo WinDVD 8 runs on Vista.

OK... but why would you advise this?

Do you feel a HDTV with bui8lt in digital tuner just
more "usable" than a media PC?

The question to ask yourself is whether you'd rather have another
computer, or an awesome HDTV. It's just worth considering since we
were talking about computers as entertainment centers. I want two
computers.

However if you are thinking about using a newly purchased computer as
an entertainment center, it might be better off to consider buying an
entertainment center instead. A HDTV does a better job than a 24"
monitor for viewing movies and TV, even though for me my computer
(which I would have anyway) can double, for now, as an entertainment
center.

Hope that clarifies a bit.
