Why didnt cloning C: work 100% for me replacing a HD?

-Happy to replace my old 40GB with a 160GB, I learned about and did perfectly clone it useing Acronis.
-My old HD had the partition for restore (which cloned fine), I dont own the "full" XP, just the recovery disks.
-the 160GB is totally useful when used through a USB (with the old HD installed in the laptop running the OS). Remove the old HD, put the new cloned in and it wont boot, even with recovery disk in.
