I have just purchased 1GB of RAM. The manufacturer is Kingston. My Desktop PC is Acer Aspire G505 with windows XP.
When I inserted the RAM into the free slot and switched on the computer i didn't notice a difference and so decided to put the new RAM in the slot that the 512mb of RAM was and and put the 512 of RAM in the 2nd slot. When i turned on the computer i got the blue screen of death and it said something about upgrading the BIOS. My computer is 3 1/2 years old so I wasnt sure if it needed an upgrade but I went to look for an upgrade for the bios and i've had trouble finding how to do it.
On the Acer website (Acer Europe - Service & Support, Drivers & Utilities, Utilities) I found some bios update tools but i'm unsure whether they will work. I am resonably sure that the AWDflash Version 8.26b and Wflash Version 1.71 are suitable for my computer and downloaded the latter but i am unsure of what to do with it. I'm also weary of the word "flash". On the acer page it says
"Warning: By flashing your motherboard, you agree to accept the possibility of BIOS flash failure. If your System is stable and working we recommend that you DO NOT try to upgrade your BIOS."
That has also made me uneasy about upgrading the bios.
So in summary
I have inserted new RAM and recieved a blue screen, and it suggested a BIOS upgrade.
I went looking for them and found the 2 upgrades above but the word flash confuses me and I did download one of them but when I use it and select the upgrade bios option from the file menu it asks me to specify a bios file.
