Default Problems with NVIDIA graphics card

I recently did a clean reinstall of windows xp media center edition on my dell laptop. Here are the specs:

Dell m1210
Intel Core 2 duo T7200 @ 2GHz
2GB RAM
NVIDIA Geforce GO 7400 graphics card

I had some problems with a trojan recently which leaded to a clean install of windows xp. I have reinstalled xp and installed every driver straight from the dell driver cd since the computer is only 1.5yrs old. However, when I tried to install the driver for the nvidia graphics card it gave me the message "The NVIDIA setup program could not locate and drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now close" I'm sure this is the correct driver because i have gotten the same one straight from NVIDIAs drivers and dls page. Any idea what the problem could be? In the device manager i have a yellow question mark next to "other drivers" and when i click it there is a yellow question mark next to "video controller (VGA Compatible). Even when I try to let it automatically find the driver from the CD it says it can't find the necessary software. Under device status: "The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver." On a side not I have also run a diagnostics test using the dell cd and it says everything is fine. Please get back to me. Thanks.

Sounds like the wrong drivers to me, the yellow triangles are warning signs telling you there is a conflict, usually drivers not being installed. It should be possible to explore the CD thus checking the drivers folder, there may well be a 'read me' note on the CD.

Out of curiosity how does this driver compare to the Nvida one you downloaded? Nvidia Geforce GO 7400 driver?

We need to be sure it's the right Video card and the right driver version, you didn't mention if you had Service pack 2 (which has USB2 drivers unlike Sp1), another idea might be to turn your firewall off if installed during the installation.

As you probably know if you click on the little square the device in Device manager you should be able to open it and check the device, install or rollback the driver there.

Its definitely the right driver. Ive used the one straight from the nvidia site and also the one from dell's site (same one). I also have service pack 2. After my first post i tried reinstalling windows again with the same problem. Its reallllly starting to annoy me now too because it should work. It just does'nt make sense.

Anybody have any ideas? I really need to get this fixed.

Update: I checked my BIOS on startup and it does recognize the nvidia gefore go 7400 card and all of its properties. Im pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the card. I just cant figure out why it wont let the driver install.

If bios is recognizing the card and is producing the bios set up screen reasonably well I'd say the card is ok... as you can have a faulty card and still show up in bios should there be a video display fault or some other problem.

Your problem has just got to be software related, since the bios is seeing the card and that the card is showing up in device manager and it's not letting you install the drivers... thus the yellow triangle warning.

The Graphic card and warning sign are in Display Adapters section aren't they?
