New AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8ghz build - no boot up no video
GA-MA770T-UD3P motherboard
Zotac ZT-983GEY3G-FSL Geforce 9800gt video card
Crucial 4gb(2x2gb) 240pin DDR3 1333 SDRAM
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive
When I press the start button all the fans turn on(power supply, cpu, video card) but I get no lights and no system beeps and the 1 dvd drive I have will not eject. I RMA'd the video card DOA because of no video but the replacement came and same result. The only other thing I can think of is the motherboard is DOA. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!!
First of all I would suggest back to basics, meaning disconnect everything, just leaving the mobo with it's CPU, RAM and graphic card.... oh yes, we need the power supply as well .
Ensure there are no USB devices plugged in, with just the 'bare bones' you should be able to get the bios to boot and be able to access the bios set up screen, lets do a little supposin'.....
.... if all was well and the bios was working you would end up with a message of some description, 'Hard drive failure', 'Please insert the disc with the operating system on.... or similar, you might even get a load of data with 'Press any key to continue', the exact message depends on the bios brand etc.
All because the hard drive is missing, it just won't sit there acting dumb, if the bios isn't booting.... properly known as POST (Power On Self Test) nothing else will happen because what happens when you press that big red button is ...
... you kick the bios out of bed, looks in the mirror (self test ) and if all is well it'll give give you a single bleep, saying righto, I'm ready to go so I'll hand control over to the CPU and then you get the real boot when the hard drive starts to load data into RAM... and away you go computerin'. Non of this will happen with no bios working, the first step I guess would be to-:
Check the mobo mounting and ensure all the screws are fitted, some may be used to 'ground' parts of the mobo.
Ensure any metal mounting lugs underneath are not shorting the mobo.
Make sure any links or DIL (Dual-in-line) switches that sets the clocking speeds are set correct.
Might as well check the bios back up battery as well seeing there's no boot.
Apart from that you can only double check everything, ensuring you haven't bent any pin's on the CPU for example, the rams are fitted properly and so on.
With the bare bones systems we've narrowed it down to just whats left, the only thing then is trying the other components elsewhere or at least try known good ones.
