I have an HP ScanJet 5P which I really love and until recently, it worked great connected via SCSI to an old WIN2000 machine that ran Deskscan II as the scanner interface. I finally decided to get rid on the old machine and moved the ScanJet 5P (along with the SCSI card) to my XP box, but I’m having issues.
1) Get rid of the ISA 8-bit SCSI card. Replaced with Adaptec 2940 Bios 1.2
You are supposed to upgrade to 1.23 for XP but this doesn't appear necessary to run the scanner. Maybe for hard disk? Accept defaults, don't need BIOS. Will get message of no Int 13 (this is card int 13 for hard disk NOT IRQ 13)
ignore it.
2) run set up from disk 1 sj166en.exe to install Deskscan II. It won't work
3) run set up from sj673en.exe to install Precision Scan Pro. It won't
work.
4) repeat disk 1 set up from sj166en.exe. Now they both work Don't know
why
Precision Scan Pro is a much better program. Deskscan II doesn't have JPG
compression but it appears necessary to install both of them.
I cannot recall the exact sequence, but at one point I had already tried installing Precision Scan Pro and sure enough, it worked great and I really liked what I saw. The only issue was the HP Copy Utility, which when started, caused a copy to be fired off automatically. However, after the initial copy, the control panel was up and you could make more copies.
So, figured I’d follow the directions above exactly and de-installed Precision Scan Pro, then installed Deskscan II, followed by re-installing Precision Scan Pro. Now, Deskscan II initially complains it cannot find the scanner, but when the scanner test is run, it finds it okay and everything works great, including the HP Copy Utility.
When I try to run Precision Scan Pro, it comes up with an error message “Sorry, scanner could not be initialized (scanner not found)”. I could not find a scanner test or configuration parameter within Precision Scan Pro and simply cannot get it to find the scanner. Remember, I did have it talking to the scanner early on and it was working fine.
So, I’m looking for help on this. To add some additional detail, I’m using an Adaptec 2930U SCSI card.
