Help, I just had a Gateway Profile 5 dumped in my lap. The machine appears to power on, but soon after pressing the power button, the lcd screen flashes the message "power saving mode on". The computer does nothing else after that. None of the keyboard lights come on, ie. num lock, ect. Any Ideas? Thanks in advance, justin
Hi welcome aboard
Here's a link that might help Gateway Support. To alter the settings you do need the machine booted into windows.
I feel its shutting down because of some other fault and that it happened to be set on to the power saving mode prior to the fault, could it be shutting down due to lack of battery power... or because it's not booting hard drive or bios, the bios has to boot before the hard drive does. If the bios isn't booting then it could well be the bios battery or as in many laptops they use very high value capacitor instead to hold the charge, these usually look like anything but a coin cell as used in desk tops, since the bios chip takes virtually no power for 'memory retention'.
Have you tried accessing bios set up, doing this will tell you if the bios is booting or not.
Thanks for the reply. After much tinkering, I found that the motherboard was bad. Replaced it with an OE board and everything is working fine. Thanks very much for the assistance. Justin
