A friend of mine has what he describes as an "old as hell" Gateway evf720 CRT monitor. The monitor suddenly stopped working for him a while ago; he told me this:
"If I plug in the power cord, the little light that says it's on turns on for about one second and then turns off, and won't turn back on until I push it again, at which point it just turns off again after one second."
He said this happened out of nowhere and that he tried reattaching the cords to the monitor to try to fix it, but nothing has helped.
Does anyone have any idea as to how this can be fixed?
Hi Rudy246 & welcome to the boards.
Sounds like the monitors in trouble, as a rough guess either the power supply or the deflection circuitry.
Had this symptom many times in TV's when the line stage refuses to start up, with the advent of processor control they now send an error code to the indicator usually a LED (light emitting diode) in form of a series of blinks.
The fault could be just about any component or even a bad soldered connection that has deteriorated with age.
Please Note:
There are very high voltages in CRT devices, these can be lethal.... it's the Volts that jolt and the mills that kill. A 'mill' is short for the current measured in milliamperes or a fraction of 1Amp, ie 250mA = 0.25 Amp.
Thanks for the welcome.
That sucks, but I suppose it was inevitable; the monitor is ancient.
My friend told me that my initial post was wrong. The button does nothing when pressed, but the monitor comes on for one second when he plugs in the power cord. Think that changes anything, or is the scenario basically the same?
