Default Formatting hard drive problems

I recenty formatted my 80GB hard drive
(HP pavilion dv1000)
i have a Toshiba MK6025GAS, running on XP home sp2
havnt changed any of the hardware sincei got the laptop, and after 3 years of use, i decided to format the hard drive. during set up, the screen said i had only 57 gb of free space. any help on recovering the lost 27 gb or so?
