So I just got a AMD A64 X2 4200+ 2.20ghz OEM which replaced my AMD 64 3000+. After replacing and turning my computer back on the computer lights and fans all turn on as well as the drives(i can hear them). But the screen stays black, I have tried the whole un plugg and replug deal and taking the ram out and putting it back in and i have tried clearing the CMOS, none of which worked, obviously. Its not my video card b.c I can put the old processor back in and it starts up fine and i can see everything perfectly, and its not the monitor for the same reason. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
Only happened since you swapped the cpu and the old one works fine.... you don't indicate if the bios is booting, are you getting the single bleep?
Are the mobo settings correct and the FSB clocking speeds for the new chip, just gotta be round here somewhere since the other chip works fine.. clearing other items of blame.
Maybe a double check on the clocking speeds should be the first thing to do, they are usually selected by DIL switches or links, if you can get into bios check the settings there and see if the CPU is recognized.
There is always 'that possibility' it's a duff cpu or the pins have been damaged.
Isn't there any switches or links on the mobo that sets the CPU and RAM speeds up... if it works fine with the other chip, then that tells you the rest of the items are working fine.
Sounds to me like it's a setting or something that doesn't like the extra CPU speed. What's the mobo or computer?
Ya I dont see anything of the sort, on the mobo or the manual.
is there a way that my computer can automatically change the CPU settings to correspond with the new processor?
Its ASUS A8N-SLI, computer is custom built by me.

(i sent you a message to help but you helped before you probably read it, thanks haha)
Yeah, mi crystal ball... I cleaned it this morning
I don't know what mobo it is.... normally when you change a cpu you have to adjust the Clocking speeds... for instance a AMD2000+ would be set for 1.67Ghz cpu frequency and 166Mhz for the RAM.
The speed for the AMD 64 3000 is 2.0Ghz, the new chip is designed for 2.2Ghz so I would imagine that is the problem, you'll need to alter the FSBs.
Have a look in the manual and see how you set the FSBs.
Looking at the link it seems that the mobo is a jumper free setting, since you tried rebooting the bios and that didn't work suggest the CPU could well be faulty or damaged, you'll need to remove the battery for at least three minutes though.
Have you checked the rams they will run with the new CPU?
