Default Ram Upgrade

I am trying to upgrade a HP pavillion a400y. Spec says it can take
PC2700 up to 2GB with max of 1GB per slot. Right now i have 256MB
installed PC2700 DDR. When i look in the bios it says

installed memory 256MB/PC2100,
mem bank 1 n/a
mem bank 2 250MB/DDR

When i add the 1GB DDR PC2700 the memory actually goes down.

installed memory 32MB/PC2100
mem bank 1 N/A
mem bank 2 32MB/ddr.

The computer must see something, but it not recognizing it right. I
upgraded the bios to the latest on the HP site.

Might be bad RAM. i always recommend Crucial memory for Compaqs and HPs. Try
here:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...vilion%20a400y

You also might try reseating the RAM you have. Did you try with just the 1GB
DIMM in Slot 1?

If that works - check the manual online - you MAY need to use same size
mem stick in each slot. ( In which case REMOVE the original and leave the
1gb for now.)

Why are you putting the memory in bank 2? Is bank 1 broken/unusable?

It's a long shot, but some systems are picky about the order in which memory
is inserted and will behave strangely or not work at all if you don't have
it right.
