Last night I hurriedly went to connect the psu cable to my 2178ea and put it in another port by mistake. There was a slight crackle and the computer is now dead with none of the power indicator lights on. I want to salvage the contents of the hard drive and assume it wont be affected. Do I need to replace the motherboard or is it possible that something smaller is blown and can be replaced?

At CompUSA etc, get an adapter. Search Google for "notebook hdd
adapter 3.5 " and you'll see lots of them. You can then hook up the disk
to a desktop PC to get your documents until you get laptop fixed.
