Default Fried my 2178ea presario

Last night I hurriedly went to connect the psu cable to my 2178ea and put it in another port by mistake. There was a slight crackle and the computer is now dead with none of the power indicator lights on. I want to salvage the contents of the hard drive and assume it wont be affected. Do I need to replace the motherboard or is it possible that something smaller is blown and can be replaced?

First of all check that the power unit is ok... this ought to be the first step,

You can either try a new power unit or try the suspect on another computer, there is that possibility you have just blown the power unit.

What port DID you put it into ? Depends - might be an internal fuse.
If you need data off the drive asap, to remove the hard drive - go to page
39.

At CompUSA etc, get an adapter. Search Google for "notebook hdd
adapter 3.5 " and you'll see lots of them. You can then hook up the disk
to a desktop PC to get your documents until you get laptop fixed.
