Default quality of LiteOn today?

I bought a Liteon external DVD burner at office Max a little over a year
I notice that they are again stocking a LiteOn external, after carrying
only an HP (which reviews were not too complimentary about) for most of
the last year. Has LiteOn quality gotten better, stayed the same or
gotten worse? Or is it model by model, with some better than others? I'm
asking becauase Offie Max has quarterly clearance cycles, and if I catch
one I can get a pretty good deal--but only if it's worth the effort to
watch in the first place.

I've always thought and still do that all liteon dvd burners and dvd recorders
are junk. Their cd writers were good but it ended there.

It's not really all that straightforward. All drive makers sell a certain
number of lemons, a number of excellent drives, and everything in between. 2
drives of the same model can vary quite a bit from each other. So it's
really something of a matter of luck with any maker. That said, it is true
that some makers have percentages that lean one way or another. Given the
online prices of $35-50 shipped, it's not much of a big deal and hardly
worth looking for a sale in a store.

LG burners tend to be pretty dependable and consistent in quality, LiteOn is
less consistent. Pioneer and NEC are also solid contenders. If you burn at
lower than max speeds, and use top quality media, any of them will serve you
well. And if they die in 12 months, at those prices who cares?
