I purchased a DVD burner (internal, but put into a housing). It has a
tray with a depression, into which the disc is placed. It is not a
snap-on spindle, such as what you find on many laptops. The manual
says the drive should be oriented either completely horizontally or
vertically, not some other angle. Vertical is good, since the housing
is meant to stand up vertically. However, since it is not a snap-on
spindle, I wonder if the advisability of vertical orientation is
mistake. Does something grab the disc so that it can be used while
vertically oriented? What about the disc falling out of the
depression in the tray when the tray is being pushed in or ejected?

Not sure about how it works but the xbox 360 uses the same method and
it works. it's a little fiddly when putting the disc in, making sure
it's sat in the indent properly, but otherwise it's fine. I have heard
of people scratching discs on the 360 by moving the machine while a
disc is in the drive and the machine is on, but I still have mine
stood on end as it's good for ventilation.
