Friends system with adequate resources under xp2 (3GHZ, 1GB)
has extremely slow performance in regards to XPs GUI and its
interface with it while burning. Burns DVDs OK though.
DMA set on burner and HD.
I saw a switch from a browser window to the nero interface take
90 seconds or so for the display to switch, with elements being
drawn slowly despite a dedicated video card.
Is this a nero problem or is it revealing some system/hardware
inconsideration??
If it is nero, what later or earlier version would be snappy.
I am soon to upgrade my system to XP and I currently use Nero
6. Which nero would be the right choice for my new system.

I would say more likely a resource problem on his system.
If you like Nero 6, I believe you can use it under XP, or get the latest
version, Version 8. Just came out.
