Does anyone know if it's possible to remove a cd-burner from a desktop
PC and convert it to an external (USB) device for use with a laptop? Is
this practical? If it's not too difficult for someone without a lot of
specialized hardware knowledge, or too costly, could someone point me
to places where I might find info about how to do it?

you just buy an enclosure. I decided to just buy an external drive
myself, but I would assume something like this would do the job

Wow! That is cheap!! Most places charge a lot more than that. What's
the catch?
I noticed that it doesnn't say anyhing about a power cord - do you know
whether it comes with one? (I mean, if you've bought one from them
before, do you remember if it did? If not, I can just call them.) My
CD-RW drive is internal, and it draws power from my desktop PC. So when
I take it out of the PC and put it in the enclosure, how will it run?

I'll have a dig around...ah, right, if you click the small inlay
image, which shows the reverse view it tells you it comes with a power
supply. I noticed lower on the page there's a aluminium one for about
£5 more, that seems to support more inputs but doesn't mention power
supply.
I don't think I've bought anything from them to be honest, they were
the first company I found when I was looking for something to fit your
bill. :O)

One issue regarding power cords... I'm in the USA. So I sent them an email
asking whether they supported the right kind of power cord for US electrical
outlets. If not, I'll have to keep looking to see if there are similar
vendors in the US where I might find a comparable price. Even with the
exchange rate, the price for this one isn't bad.

****, I am not sure with how that works but my son came back from the
states with a drive of some sort and adapter and when he tried it the
thing blew up... not trying to scare you or anything. Let's hope they
can give you good news.

But if you really mean a cd burner, for a little more money you can pick
up an external dvd/cd burner with software and no hassles.
