Given that the 4870 has a beefier cooler, most likely AMD set the fan speed
schedule on both cards, such that the fan doesn't spin up until the core
temp reaches over 90C. You can always force a different fan speed manually.
Does Rivatuner work with this card?

THat's not much more than the 8800GT. Have to say tyhe 4870 has a much
better HSF design though as it exhausts the heat out of the back of your
case. 4850 doiesn't and dumps the heat in your case. If you are going to
change it look for one that exhausts the heat out of the case. Arctic
Cooling makes those but not sure if they have one for 4850.

Thanks. I just noticed that the stock fan speed was not at 100%. How
could I make the fan to always rotates at max speed via hardware? Asus
has a software solution, but I don't wanna bet on it.

say a jumper or short-circuit...

The fan speed is most likely controlled by PWM, using temperature feedback
from the GPU internal diode. There is likely no external thermeister to
jumper. Best way is to plug the fan directly to the 12V line from your PSU,
or to a motherboard fan header. You will need one or two cable adapters: http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal....php?cPath=289
You may want to first run the fan at 100% using Rivatuner or ATT, to make
sure the noise is tolerable...

Now using Asus' SmartDoctor to run the fan at full speed.

Don't just take my word for it. Be doubly sure and probe your 4850's on-card
fan header with a voltmeter.

Actually it is. I have a stock XFX 8800GT that maxes out at exactly 65C
and idles at 50C. Considering that the 4850 has a chip limit of like
90+ before it stops working, the high temperatures are something to be
concerned about. Also high temps tend to shorten a chip's life greatly.
I'm waiting on revised 4870's with new coolers to replace my 8800GT. I
really like the new 4800's and it's a shame they have such an easily
fixable flaw.
