The release of the HD 4870x2 is scheduled to be by the first of August. It
will have 2gb of GDDR5 memory on it. It is expected to be priced around
$499 US.

I would worry about quality of its driver.... unless you don't plan to
use Vi$ta.

That 2GB is going to take a big chunk of the 4GB of virtual memory space
on systems running 32 bit OS's, unless they have a work around that
only 1GB is mapped in at a time. No problem for 64 bit OS's.

I think you will find this isn't high compared to the best nVidia
cards of just a few months back. In fact the 9800 GX2 with 1GB of DDR3
RAM is about the same price, and all indications are that the 4870 x2
will perform much better.
So while I am not in the market, I don't think the price is
outrageous.

ATI Vista drivers are actually a tad more mature than nVida Vista drivers...
The 4870 isn't architecturally that different from the 3870. It just has
more shader and texture units.
I believe you also need Vista to do CrossfireX or 3-way SLI efficiently.
Something about a limitation in the number of buffered frames in XP.

Apparently there will be a 1GB, GDDR3 version of R700 / 4870 X2
(calling it 4850 X2 seems more fitting though) coming sometime after
the highend 2GB, GDDR5 4870 X2.
