Default Dual-Slot Radeon HD 4850

Hey guys. How long will it be before any 4850's with a dual-slot
cooler (something similar to that on the 3870 and 4870) that not only
fixes the current fan speed issue on the 4850's (see other posts about
the ridiculously high temperatures recorded on 4850's with the default
settings) but would also exhaust the hot air out of the case.

It's enough to make me strongly consider saving ~£20 and getting a
well cooled 3870 that doesn't need the fan to run at it's highest
speed (and end up sounding like a vacuum cleaner).

Kind Regards,

Matt

Or failing that, would the Akasa Vortexx Cooler (http://
www.akasa.co.uk/akasa_e.../spec_ak_vc03_bluv.htm) in either blue or
standard:

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...avigationKey=0

be a suitable replacement for the stock cooler on the Powercolor
Radeon 4850.

I would be putting it in the following system:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz 12M Cache S775 1333MHZ
Gigabyte S775 Intel X48 DDR2 ATX Audio Lan 1600FSB 6xSATAII
Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL5(5-5-5-18) Heat Spreader
2 x Western Digital Caviar 500GB S300 16mb 7200rpm
PowerColor HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 Dual DVI HDTV Out PCI-E Graphics Card
Antec 300 Three Hundred Case - No PSU
Corsair Memory 550W VX PSU

Kind Regards,

Matt

I noticed on Hardspell that they have pictures of a number of non-reference
design 4850 cards. A couple look like dual slot designs but perhaps
they haven't decided on a fan yet.

Also, is it easy to remove the current stock cooler on the Powercolor
4850 and replace it with this Akasa Vortexx Cooler?

Kind Regards,

Matt

HIS made a card with your name on it...

More pics:

Looks like the familiar IceQ / AC Silencer design, should be quiet enough to
run at full speed all the time.

Any idea how long it will be before this hit the shops in the UK?

Million-dollar question! You are better off phoning your favorite e-tailers
(overclockers.co.uk , scan.co.uk, etc.) and ask when they expect to receive
the HIS HD 4850 IceQ4.

To complicate matters slightly, according to the Turkish forum post, there
are two expected SKUs, a standard-clocked IceQ4 Turbo selling for $25 over
the reference model, and an overclocked IceQ4 TurboX selling for $35 over
the reference model. Clock speeds for the TurboX are either unknown or not
finalized.

Basically not soon enough

I've gone ahead and bought the Akasa Vortexx Neo (the blue one) to go
on my new 4850 and I'll post in a few days to let you guys know how I
get on.

Kind Regards,

Matt

I hope the Vortexx Neo fits your 4850 well. The cooler is "universal", not
designed for any particular model. Depending on the position of the GPU on
the PCB, the heat sink shroud may fall short of the backplate, negating the
whole "outside exhaust" thing.
