Default Cheapest Method to Play DVD With X1250.

Hi Folks:

I gave the wrong number with first post and have tried
to delete it. Here it is again with proper model number
in title.

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm ignorant.

I've been using my business partner's HP Media Center,
running XP, to develop some software. I've come to
enjoy putting a DVD movie in the lower left corner as I
write and test C++.

This weekend I decided to assemble a budget PC with a
little more beef, and got a GigaByte Micro ATX with an on
board Radion X1250, which is part of AMD's RS690 chip set.

The processor is a bit faster, and the second gig makes
things a lot smoother. So I'm happy.

But I'd like to be able to play movies. After
downloading the Catalyst 8.4 drivers for the chip, Windows
Media player still complains about not having a compatible
DVD decoder.

The Catalyst download page also references something
called the "ATI Multimedia Center". This page lists a
series of components. One is called "DVD/DTV Decoder".
But the comments say the component is "used to validate a
supported original ATI Install CD". Will this download
and GigaByte's driver CD get me a functional DVD decoder,
and everything I need to put a DVD movie in a corner of
my display?

There is also a component called "Multimedia Center".
Is this part of the solution I'm looking for?

If I'm deluding myself, can you recommend a DVD encoder
or a program that plays DVDs?

Thanks
Larry
