Can I only update the driver, without touching CCC?

I'm using 7.12 and need to update to 8.1. Can I only update the driver, or
should I update to the whole CCC 8.1?

Under XP, 3 out of the 11 resolved issues brought by Cat 8.1 have to do with
the CCC. If you care enough about Cat 8.1 to bother updating the core
drivers, update CCC as well.
