Default ATI AIW X800 Input Switching Problems

I am still running AMD Socket 939 mainly because I have the AGP X800 series
"All In Wonder" series video card,
which I use for capturing video to HDD for ultimately creating DVD`s.

I hadn`t used the capture feature in awhile and when I tried to capture
recently, I was UNABLE to SWITCH video inputs from the default co-ax cable
TV tuner (channel-3) to my usual S-VIDEO capture mode, which provides a
significantly better signal than the co-ax cable input signal both of which
are from my Sat. box DVR!!

Yes, I have BOTH Co-Ax AND S-Video outputs available from the Sat. box DVR,
running to the inputs of the X800 All In Wonder capture card. I have used
this capture card and its video input switching capabilities *very*
successfully in the past, and I dont understand what has changed since I
last used the feature?

Not only can I NOT correctly switch video inputs trying both my Mouse AND
Keyboard combinations (Alt+3 or Alt+F7), but the whole ATI MMC TV interface
will lock up/freeze causing me to Control/Alt/Delete just to kill the ****
thing.

I have since downloaded and installed the latest ATI/AMD Catalyst Software
Suite vers. 7.5. (05/31/07),
and I already had the most recent Multimedia Software vers. 9.16, which I
re-installed anyway
(it ended up reinstalling as a "repair"), just for the possibility this
might fix a corrupt driver!

None of these actions on my part has resolved this issue of not being able
to switch the video capture inputs, or the problem of: When attempting to
switch video capture inputs the ATI capture interface locks up!

Also, it takes what seems like forever for the secondary video
capturing/recording interface to eventually pop up on the desktop after
having pressed the RECORD button on the main TV interface! This too never
used to be a problem until just recently.

Anybody here have experience with ATI X800 series "All In Wonder" capture
card, or any ideas or possible remedies?

thanks,

Matt

It's been my experience that when a repair install doesn't correct a
situation the best thing to do is a complete clean and reinstall of the ATI
drivers and software as outlined at ati.com/install. PIA for sure but
usually ends up being easier than trying this and that. YMMV

Captain Midnight

First off, thanks for your response to my post.

Would I necessarily have to UNINSTALL/reinstall the "Catalyst Suite"
(Vers.7.5) software as well?
OR, should I UNINSTALL and reinstall just the MMC software (vers.9.16),
which at my previous
attempt to resolve these issues, somehow ended up being recognized by ATI
only as a REPAIR!

Matt

The WDM drivers are supposed to be installed before the video drivers. The
release notes for the individual WDM drivers even states to do it that way
if you have problems. So yes that means starting over.

The only way to be sure everything is right is to completely clean it.
Sometimes WDM drivers can have problems even though none are reported in
Device Manager. I think chances of that are good in your case. If your
seeing a Repair install and your not initiating it in Add/Remove Software,
that is yet another sign things have gone wrong. In fact to the steps listed
at ati.com/ install I would also empty C:\ati\support (or wherever your
unpacking them) to make sure your not getting version conflicts.

Even though I've done this dozens of times I still need a cheat sheet to
make sure I do everything and in the proper order. I think the most common
problem of installing MMC is not doing it in the correct order.

Captain Midnight

Yeah thanks, I was afraid you were going to say this! Ugggh!!

Good lord, what sorts of problems have you encountered with ATI software
that have
caused you to "completely clean it" "dozens of times"? Anything similar to
mine?
I still dont understand why one time everything WORKS as it should, and
another time
it doesnt!

Matt

Besides the AIW I have an HDTV Wonder. Really haven't had too many problems
with the AIW and Not too many with the HDTV Wonder after 9.02 and before
9.13. IIRC that's 9.1 versions. Sometimes they don't install correctly the
first time, for whatever reason. 9.13 crashed way too many times to use no
matter how many times I installed so went back to 9.08. 9.14 crashed but was
usable. Had a terrible video corruption problems in 9.15 when switching
between analog, SD and HD that didn't get resolved until 9.16 and I didn't
install the Parental Control. Reinstalled Windows a couple of times for
unrelated reasons. Ran Studio(video editing/capture software) while watching
TV on the AIW. That really hosed MMC. Forgot about the TitanTV debacle in
9.08. Every time I tried to schedule a program had to clean and reinstall to
get MMC working again. Was really a slow learner on that.

This is over a nearly 3 year period though. Somewhere around 9.06 cleaning
became a standard procedure for me, it just ends up being easier For
anything but a minor problem that a Repair install can fix.

Then I bought a Network Media player to use in the living room with an HDTV
and my needs changed so I went back to 9.06 to revaluate it and will do
likewise with 9.08 shortly.

I think the problems I've had with 9.1x, except the Parental Control, are
mostly because my P4-2.4GHZ isn't quite up to doing Multview. Won't know for
sure until I build a new system. 9.1x has a lot of overhead that really
doesn't benefit someone with just an AIW. Consider using 9.08. Of course
going to an older version really requires cleaning before reinstalling.
