4870X2

Has anyone out there got this card?? I have always been a fan of Nvidia and
currently use a N9800GX2 but my mobo is crossfire and i like the look of the
spec on the HD4870X2 card which has a higher spec. Will this improve my
gaming dramatically compared to the above mentioned Nvidia card??

Here are my system specs...

Gigabyte GA X48T DQ6 mainboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5Ghz
8 gig of Reaper X DDR3 PC10666 1333mhz Dual Channel
Coolermaster Real Power 1250watt PSU
Vista Ultimate 64bit

Will it be better? Yes. Dramatic gains? That really depends on the games you
run and your screen real estate. Going from a 9800GX2 to a HD4870X2 on my
19" LCD at 1280x1024 max res even with the most graphically demanding gain
won't result in much of a difference with these. On a 24" 1920x1200 it would
be a different story.

I hjave put in a Powercolour HD4870X2, replaced 2 HD3870's. I use a 24"
1920x1600 monitor, and every game is like playing a new game. FSX runs far
far smoothly, I am playing Space Siege at the minute, and that is noticeably
improved as well. I too have Vista 64bit, and 8Gb of Ram in my system.

Like I said, more dramatic improvements would be seen at higher resolutions
with demanding games. We still have no idea what the OP's setup is or his
games.

OK thanks all. I too use a 24" monitor with a desktop resoultion of
1920x1200 but run the game (COD4) in 1680x1050 as anything higher seems to
make the game crash.
Things like Antialiasing are not being used either.
My monitor is a Iiyama Prolite B2403WS and is connected via a HDMI cable.

A 9800GX2 1024Mb is like having a two single cards with 512Mb each. The game
acts as though it has 512Mb of video RAM (which it does) and that's the
issues with resolutions above 1680x1050 for COD4. An HD4870X2 has 2048Mb of
video ram, so each card has 1024Mb discrete available.1920x1200 with eye
candy now will be usable. And fairly fast.

It is fairly fast, as you say.

As my mobo is designed for Crossfire i guess that fitting two 4870X2 cards
will make it a whole lot better then.

I think i will sell my Nvidia N9800GX2 and get two 4870X2's instead.
On the subject of this, how easy is it to set up Crossfire??
